With each migraine some of the photopsias began to persist and accumulate

"A 32-year-old woman had a long personal history of migraine headaches accompanied by typical auras of photopsias... In 1990, with each migraine some of the photopsias began to persist and accumulate, ecentually encompassing her entire visual field all of the time."

(Liu et al., 1995, case 1)

Of the 60 subjects with suspected diagnosis of definite persistent aura without infarction, 24 (40,0 %) reported a single episode (subjects #8, #14, #20, #30, #80, #136, #142, #152, #153, #156, #159, #167, #168, #169, #180, #182, #233, #254, #257, #258, #264, #265, #283, #300) and 36 (60,0 %) multiple episodes of persistent aura (subjects #1, #23, #42, #45, #52, #73, #75, #85, #86, #104, #120, #138, #141, #145, #147, #157, #162, #171, #172, #175, #179, #185, #189, #200, #217, #228, #230, #234, #235, #240, #273, #276, #277, #284, #296, #301), described by sufferers as "episodes", "flares", "rounds of symptoms" or "bouts of aura", respectively.

Multiple episodes of persistent aura without infarction

"Hello, I am new to this forum, but thought I'd see if anyone could help. I am a 34 year old female & have had typical migraines with aura, head pain & nausea since I was 8. In 1994 I had a migraine in which the aura (flashing lights & dark spots) never went away. An MRI showed nothing was wrong. At the time I was told it was probably some permanent damage to my optic nerve. I was able to adjust & it didn't bother me too much. Subsequent migraines would cause an aura that was more obscuring than the day to day visual disturbance.

Three weeks ago I had another migraine in which this more obscuring aura has not gone away. This has caused great discomfort as I now feel dizzy & nauseous often.

My neurologist has ordered a new MRI and an EEG. He also prescribed Depakote which a 1997 study had shown to offer some improvement.

Does anyone have any current information on this condition or know of anyone doing research or clinical trials? I am told this is extremely rare, but that is little comfort to someone who has it."

(Seeing Spots, ACHENet forums – Headache Talk – Ask the Expert – Persistant aura from migraine, February 23, 2004)

An episode of persistent aura was defined by (1) the onset of at least one persistent aura symptom (duration > 1 week) following a period > 2 weeks with a stable or improving neurological status and/or (2) a clinically significant worsening of at least one pre-existing persistent aura symptom (duration > 1 week) following a period > 2 weeks with a stable or improving neurological status. If the onset of at least one persistent aura symptom and/or the clinically significant worsening of at least one pre-existing persistent aura symptoms occurs within an interval of 2 weeks, these events are coded as belonging to a single episode of persistent aura.

The mean number of episodes was 2,8 (range 1 - 29) for the 60 subjects with definite persistent aura.
