Neuropathological studies

"When I went to my neurologist who was about as helpful and easy to work with as my vision is, she made an interesting point. She told me that 'I am sorry Stan, but unless I could kill you and look at your brain cells under a microscope, there is nothing I can do for you.' I then asked several doctors if looking at brain cells under a microscope could really yield all of this information. In short, it could.

We should write wills out to have our visual cortexes removed upon our deaths if they happen to be untimely or otherwise and have... analyze every part of the visual cortex under a microscope, or something to that effect. I know that if I happen to be... approaching inevitable death..., I am thinking about making definite plans to have my visual cortex removed in order to subject it to intense scrutiny (chemical tests, microscopes, etc.) to find out what is going on. This could yield absolute decades of research taking into account how God-awefully slow and painful research is going for both HPPD and persistent aura."

(starrant [subject #138], HPPD online - HPPD Forum - HPPD Support - HPPD General Support Section - Kind of morbid but could yield volumes of research, August 17, 2007)

UK

In the UK, the Queen Square Brain Bank for Neurological Disorders in London (a member of Brainnet Europe) holds a collection of brains donated specifically for research by people with a variety of neurological diseases including migraine. The brain donor scheme is described here. Contact can be made via phone (0044 [0] 20 7837 8370) or email (qs-bb@ion.ucl.ac.uk).

USA

In USA, the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center has been established at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, as a centralized resource for the collection and distribution of human brain specimens for brain research. There are several ways to get a donation process started: by requesting a brochure, by phone (1-800-BRAIN BANK or 1-800-272-4622) or by email (BTRC@MCLEAN.ORG).
