Persistent aura and spiritual experience

Only about 1% of sufferers from persistent aura without infarction report a spiritual interpretation of persistent aura VS in terms of a religious experience, reflecting the increasing secularization of modern Western societies. Considerably more frequent, it is attributed to a special gift of seeing more than others can see, a special view of the world or an altered state of consciousness, sometimes referring to esoteric concepts of the "third eye", "mind's eye" or "inner eye". A New Age background can also be encountered in notions of persistent aura VS as seeing molecules, energy or the human "aura", seeing spirits or fairies, or the "dreambody" (Mindell, 1982). As rationalistic approaches, the persistent aura VS experience may prompt reflexions on the experience of reality as illusion or the non-sense of the persistent aura experience. Depending on socio-cultural background, children may display almost the same range of varieties of spiritual interpretations of persistent aura VS as that found in adults. Religious and spiritual forms of causal attribution of the persistent aura VS experience favor acceptance and positive coping with the persisting perception disorder.

Can anyone answer this?

"I know lots of people state that VS and visual symptoms could be some kind of unexplained phenomenon such as spirits, particles of matter, orgone etc etc... but if that were to be the case, how is it that I can still see these things with my eyes shut?

Im not arguing against the alternative ideas, in fact I like them, but I don't see how any of the problems could be created by an external source if I can still see them with my eyes closed?"

"I don't agree with the it being anything other than psychological/physical damage. I can't believe the outside phenomenon stuff. I'd love to think it was true but I can't 'see it'."

"Well, there is that line of thought that says psychic vision is really a form of seeing without your eyes (the whole extra sensory thing). Someone from that point of view could argue that anything you see with your eyes closed is even more evidence for psychic-influenced vision.

I'm with you guys though. My first thought when I see things with my eyes closed is my brain is doing funny things again."

"When I was a child I thought I was seeing the molecules of the air and thought I was 'special' because nobody else could see them. Then I realized I could not see air with my eyes closed, and discounted that idea... as I got older, along came learning about the anatomy of the eye and once I heard about the vitreous (the gel inside the eye) I figured THAT is what I was seeing the molecules of! That quickly faded, too.

Now, basically, I think it is something our optic nerves are detecting but don't know what to do with, so it shows up as feedback/noise or whatever you want to call it. I think if it were something spiritual, it would not be the same all the time. I could stare for hours at a blank wall and see the same exact thing. Eyes closed in a lighted room, same thing. Eyes closed in a dark room - completely different story - the same exact snow is there just more stuff is happening along with it. I cannot believe that I'm only seeing spiritual things alone in a dark room with my eyes closed."
