Candida

Candida albicans (larger image see here)

Candida is a genus of yeasts, including Candida albicans which can cause numerous infections (called candidasis or thrush), especially in immunocompromised patients. Alternative medicine practitioners often use the term Candida to refer to a complex with broad spectrum of symptoms, the majority of which center around gastrointestinal distress, rashes, sore gums and other miscellaneous symptoms including chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). This diagnosis Candida, which may give rise to "the great fungal business" (Stiefelhagen, 2000) of extensive and expensive diagnostic tests and therapies, is considered incorrect by mainstream evidence-based medicine (Scheurlen, 1996; Barrett, 2005).

The aforementioned alternative medicine diagnosis Candida has been considered by few sufferers (and their complementary and alternative practitioners) in the Ezboard forum Visual snow or static as cause of persistent visual snow and other symptoms of persisting perception disorder. However, the application of standardised diagnostic criteria (ICD-10, DSM-IV, ICHD-II) suggests a diagnosis of Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) or persistent aura without infarction in these cases. Appropriate follow-up reports are missing in all of these cases.

In one case, the subject's (#434) conviction of Candia albicans being the culprit was based on the phenomenal similarity between his visual hallucinations of random form dimension and the microscopic image (200-fold magnification) of the yeast as encountered in the Wikipedia article on Candida albicans (see microphotograph above). "I have looked at many pictures of Candida albicans under a microscope", wrote garryk1985 (subject #434), "and the long worm like thing I see in my eyes resembles identically to what I see in my eyes along with little bubbles with darkness inside them". Following these suggestions, another subject (#458) proposed similar ideas attributing persistent visual snow and related symptoms to candida infection (see here).

The diet didn't not help my visual symptoms and I turned out to not have a candida problem

"If you go on Amazon.com you can find a nice list of books about diets to help you get rid of candida overgrowths. Usually they recommend a mix of diet and probiotics - you can mail order all kinds of happy little microbes to take in a pill with breakfast. There are some tests that the doctors can run (and some of them involve fecal samples!). You might end up at an osteopath or an alternative practitioner for some of this stuff. I would definitely be careful with the hardcore anti-fungals because some of the side effects are rather severe. Diflucan is commonly prescribed for yeast infections (the girl affliction kind).

Some of the authors of the books you may find are absolutely convinced that yeast is responsible for every medical affliction there is. I did quite a bit of reading on candida when I came down with virally-induced CFS (90% better now!). I guess some immune compromised people can get all kinds of candida problems, and treating those problems clears up all kinds of symptoms. The diet didn't not help my visual symptoms and I turned out to not have a candida problem, but paying great attention to what I was eating improved a heck of a lot of other things!"
