"Dear Dr. Podoll, I see from your website regarding aura symptoms that you collect testimonies from migraine sufferers. I am a writer and painter (or at least I was until a particularly prolonged migraine in 1991), and though I have never painted anything from my auras, I have written about them in detail. I am drafting an abbreviated account of my history for you to add to your collection which I shall be able to send to you in a few days. Please advise me as soon as possible if you are no longer interested in such accounts.

My migraines although starting unexceptionally enough, altered suddenly in character fifteen years ago when I was thirty-seven years old. Both my parents are migraine sufferers, one with Common Migraine, the other with Classical Migraine. Classical Migraine was widespread on both sides of the family, but I have no siblings with whom my history can be compared.

My own feeling about the condition is that it is one which should be managed rather than fought; I feel that the intense creativity of my childhood and young adulthood was probably derived from something in the migrainous process, i.e. that migraine is not the grit which produced the pearl but the pearl itself. However it can also be a killer, and there are certain kinds of probably quite rare migraines which need special care and attention if lasting psychological or neurological damage is to be avoided. No-one has really known how to properly treat my condition and therefore I remain somewhat vulnerable. However that is not why I am contacting you. I am contacting you because my story although distressing to me could surely be of use in badly needed research. I am assuming that you collect testimonies for this reason, and that one day sooner or later, my story may be put to good use.

I trust you will treat my contact with you in the strictest possible confidence.

Yours sincerely, GRN"

"No it was not a prolonged headache. The aura symptoms were of 9 days duration. The headaches by that time were negligible. All significant symptoms which followed this particular event were those of aura. Some but not all were prolonged."
