Jruddy's 3rd episode of persistent aura without infarction on December 20, 2007, a complication of sporadic hemiplegic migraine, manifested with a hemiparesis left that showed a significant worsening with his 4th episode of persistent aura in February 2008, prompting fears of having amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Thus, it was quite a relief when he learned that EMG examination came back clean. He commented:
"Regarding ALS, I feel the same way. Though the chances were practically NIL, it was a relief to have diagnostic confirmation of no Motor Neuron Disease, especially ALS.
I look at it like we all have a lottery ticket. I even wrote a poem back in February when the weakness started to spread to my arm.
The Lottery
I have a ticket, though the prize is grim.
Each day I check my numbers and hope I didn't win.
Last prize is for the winning masses,
first is for the losing few
I pray that I may come in last
so that I might grow old with you."

October 6, 2009, jruddy submitted the following migraine poem. "For your enjoyment, here's a poem I've written about migraine attacks."
Migraine
Stars burn in second sight
The sinking island of the mind
Consumed by flashing waters bright
behind the failing eyes of man.
Scrambling spiders of the skin,
Escaping from the storm ahead,
Nature flees from nature's wrath,
And leaves a silent interlude.
Sword strikes lightening swift.
Seek a hole, a refuge from the rain,
Body failing, mind flailing.
A shapeless sac of cold misery.
Cicada's song on winter's night
Fights through the puddles of the mind,
The shelter of the soul repaired,
Atlantis rises from the sea.
