Seasonal factors

Clinical observations show that migraine attacks may have a seasonal timing, suggesting a role of chronobiological mechanisms and their alterations in the disease (Alstadhaug et al., 2005; Alstadhaug et al., 2007).

One subject (#120) with a diagnosis of definite persistent aura reported seasonal factors as trigger factors of the multiple episodes of her persisting perception disorder.

Definite persistent aura without infarction

"I also started to see a pattern: I have two major 'episodes' a year: one on the onset of winter when it becomes colder (Sept-Oct) and one on the onset of summer (May-June) when it becomes warmer.

I could never figure out how the time of year could be related to the vs. It can't have something to do with the temperatures.

But then this year my 'episode' started just recently (Nov), so that's almost two months too late according to the patterns on my notes. Then I noticed something:

This year we had a long after-summer with warm temperatures and the rainy season only started a few days ago, about the same time my current episode started and also two months later then usual... so there is my pattern again.

Now I'm not blaming this on the weather like a once injured limb thats starting to hurt when it rains or something...

I'm thinking it's the light, the amount and intensity of it changes with the seasons.... the change of light is also changing my vision, in a few weeks I will be used to it and my current episode will end again, just like it did before... till summer starts and I will suffer again.

Now I must mention that I have slight astigmatism so that might have something to do with it, but it doesn't explain the extreme vs... unless that is stress related due to the 'episodes'.

Anyway, I felt I had to make a post about this and see if others could find a related pattern in their symptoms....

I know I have a pattern and I can set my clock (or calendar) on it... not that it makes much difference in the suffering."

Probable persistent aura without infarction

"Well I notice this forum isn't used much but I will definitely be reading the threads and hopefully talk to some of you.

I have had visual snow since 13, I'm now 30, I never knew what it was for a long time, doctors just said ignore it as its gets worse I will adapt.

Specialists and opticians couldn't find anything.

I get migraines and find each time I have one I'm left with worse visual snow, this last week has been bad however, I drank a lot of water today and that seems to have helped, I also get panic attacks etc, really didn't realise how much all these things I have been experiencing are related.

I will be trying the B12 now I think.

Only realy problem I have is it's worse in the summer, bright sunshine, my night vision is starting to suffer and I cant stay in a dark room otherwise all I can see is this ongoing light show.

It sucks really, my profession is photography and I find I have problems after staring down the viewfinder for a long time."

"VS and seasonal shift in symptoms??? This is my 3rd year of persistent VS and afterimages. This time I have noticed the pattern of increased symptoms every March/April - This is the time it started 3 years ago, the next year was pretty horrible from April all thru winter (I live in Australia) and this year my symptoms have increased markedly again, right on time!!! So Im starting to think there is a seasonal element to this, at least for myself, I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this. Any ideas about physiological changes occurring that increase the symptoms? Someone posted about a possible correlation with allergies. It certainly correlated with the usual blocked nose and flus that come at the cold change every year for myself... Think I'll move to the equator."
