Improving factors of persistent aura

George Frederick Watts, Hope, 1885.

Factors improving the intensity of persistent aura symptoms in at least some subjects include somatic factors like pharmacotherapy and proper hydration, factors affecting the visual input (i.e. visual rest, using a flashlight in a dark room, dark glasses, colored overlays, looking through the window of a car, watching TV) and psychotherapeutical techniques such as stress reduction, cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, visualization, distraction and masking techniques. In general, trying to live a busy lifestyle and not focus on symptoms may help to increase the likelihood of them decreasing.

The knowledge of these potentially improving factors obviously bears therapeutical implications for persistent aura sufferers. However, due to the great variability of the spontaneous course of persistent aura without infarction and/or differences in subjects' responsiveness to the various factors, the same improving factor which seems to be effective in one subject may prove uneffective for another. The sufferer is not to blame for that, the illness is to blame.

"Owning" visual snow

"I am a big fan of experimenting. In the case of VS, I really think it is a way of 'owning' the disorder. You're sort of facing it straight on, but at the same time you make yourself sort of a detached observer. I think it helps in dealing with the whole thing psychologically."
