#150 Triplet M

"I included all three triplets [C, L and M] here because they all see the starbursts around lights, I am not sure about other visual symptoms for L [subject #149] (he has a diagnosis of autism) and M [subject #150] (she has a diagnosis of autism, ADHD, Anxiety-NOS, lazy eye, astigmatism in both eyes), they are not as verbal as C [subject #148] but they all drew the starbursts for me and they are all different number of lines extending from the light so I believe they are all really seeing them."

"When I realized that the starbursts I was seeing were not 'normal' I started asking people if they see starbursts, and asked the children if they see them. Everyone except my children said no. This was at about 3 yrs old. I drew pictures of headlights we were looking at with 4 lines coming from them and asked if they see this, they each drew more lines, each was a different number of lines."

"BTW there was snow on the TV last night and I asked my 3 kids if they can see the little black and white dots blinking on the TV. They said yes.

I asked them to look around the room and tell me if they see it anywhere else. They all said no. I asked if they could TRY to see it anywhere else. They all said they could only see it on the TV."

"I know it sounds weird... but my daughter [subject #150], my sister and myself all get similar things with either bad allergy days filling up the ear with fluid or low pressure systems in the area. Another thing, my daughter and I get a popping a lot when it is about to rain, like bubbles are coming to the surface (of what I'm not sure!). Yeah, I guess it kind of sounds like a doppler ultrasound, if I remember correctly. With all three of us, it usually goes away before we can get to a doctor because it is all weather related. So having a doc look at our eardrums later in the day or the next day, they all say it looks fine."

"K, a new development. My 7 yr old daughter M [subject #150] says when she closes her eyes real tight she sees all kinds of patterns. She says they are not grids (not in so many words, but I described a grid to her) but they are things like flowers and a whole bunch of other things. I am going to try to sit down with her and have her give me a list and do a drawing if she can."

"This is M [subject #150] that is seeing these patterns (her own word). She says she sees faces (nobody she knows) and flowers and tables with vases on the tables with flowers in the vases, and other things I cannot remember. They are pretty complex visuals, not just pressure phosphenes. (I know she used to experiment with those, though, pressing on her eyes really hard it would scare me to death! Silly, because I used to do that too, so I shouldn't be scared!) The only time she tells me about these is when she is closing her eyes tight while I'm washing her hair so the soap doesn't get in. I'm going to see if she can reproduce this at other times and talk me through what she is seeing, and then draw some pictures. Maybe I'll have some for you tomorrow, if homework allows time tonight."

"No time for scanning pictures now, but I got M [subject #150] to draw me 8 pictures this afternoon. Every time she closes her eyes it is different. Some do look like grids, others are: colored fans that are spinning, 'marbles' in an alternating color pattern, a star, 3 'blue cards' spread out in a sort of hand-fan pattern, a cat paw print, one big black dot, and twice she had a big white dot. This was all in a 5 minute time period. I am wondering if the dots might have been afterimages of the light bulbs, but the rest - I looked around the room and could not find anything that they could have been afterimages of. In the past she has told me about what I wrote above while in the bath facing the blank wall, so I know they were not afterimages, unless they were super delayed? Is that possible?"
