Aura pattern explained by the vascular theory

Visualizing the mechanism that leads to propagation in the vascular model of migraine aura. A gradient in tolerating oxygen deprivation causes an ordered sequence of affection. © 2005 Markus Dahlem

The aura symptoms might appear as being caused by a neural traveling wave, whereas in fact a cortical gradient merely coordinates wave-like behavior. Such "phase waves" would predict a variable speed of the events spreading in the cortex. While the temporal scale should vary, the spatial path of the symptoms in sensory space, e.g. the visual field, should not vary substantially. This ist because wave-like behavior is caused by predetermined gradient in susceptibility to ischemia.
